Tool Kit for Roofing Installation

If you’re looking to install a flat roof at home than it’s worth ensuring that you have everything that you need to get started. There are some tools you’ll probably already have, but there are some specialist items that it’s likely that you’ll need to add to your tool kit.

Primer

While this is optional it will make a difference in the finish, the foundation of a roof can definitely be improved by using primer. Most often this is only needed when using bitumen roofing, however there are primers that can be applied for EPDM roofs which will help with the performance of the roofing adhesive by creating a smooth and uniform starting surface to the roof.

Scraper

If this isn’t the first time you’re revamping your roofing, it’s entirely possible there might be some stubborn areas where the adhesive appears particularly strong. You may wish to invest in a scraper to help bring some of these old roofing components up and leave yourself with a smoother surface to begin applying your new roofing onto.

Broom/Leaf Blower

Again, in terms of prepping your roofing surfaces, it’s a good idea to get rid of any debris that might have fallen, or anything that could prevent smooth installation. Use a broom to sweep or a leaf blower to clear your roof and prep your surface ready for installation.

Scissors

A heavy duty pair of scissors will be invaluable when it comes to cutting any excess rubber roofing.

Adhesive

A must have in any flat roofing toolkit. Without it, there’s no way you’ll be able to stick down your rubber roofing. Your adhesive is one of the most important components in the roofing toolkit, so it’s worth investing to ensure you purchase a good quality and long lasting one.

Adhesive Gun

One of the ways of applying your adhesive to your rubber roofing, an adhesive gun can make your job easier. A lot of guns are sold directly with the adhesive you purchase, so you might be able to find a good deal here.

EPDM Roofing Brush or Paint Brush

Another way to apply adhesive to your rubber roofing is by using a paintbrush or EDPM roofing brush. These brushes can also be used for applying primer if you are using one.

Brass Penny Roller

Penny rollers are used to compress and apply pressure to the rubber membrane and ensure a smooth, flush finish.

Tape Primer

Used before applying seam, cover or flashing tapes onto EPDM. The primer should be applied to the rubber and the rubber’s surface MUST be clear of dust or dirt.

Flashing/Seam/Cover Tape

Flashing tape is primarily used when the rubber has to be cut to go round an obstacle or corner like a chimney, and acts as a seal between two different cuts of membrane. Seam tape is similar, but is used to join two pieces of rubber where overlap is present. Cover Tape is used for covering trims and for minor repairs. These are finishing elements of your roof and will make the difference between a professional and DIY finish, but also help reinforce the quality and durability of your roof.

Gloves and Protective Wear

As with all projects, it’s important to wear protective gear when attempting to install flat roofing. Some adhesives can contain chemicals that may react with the skin or cause allergies so it’s important to reduce the risk of this being a possibility.
